HID Discharge Lamps
High-intensity discharge bulbs are gas-discharged arc bulbs. They create light by conveying electrical discharge between a pair of electrodes. The electrical discharge is sent through plasma or ionized gas. They are mainly used in sectors that require high intensity of light such as stadiums, warehouses, street lighting and in other sectors.
HID lamps are mainly used where lights are likely to be left on for a long period of time, where high colour is required and anywhere where efficiency and controllability is required from your lighting. Examples where HID lamps are classically used include video and filming locations, street lighting, flood lights within stadiums and concert venues, and for use within and outside commercial buildings.
The LED bulb has two electrodes (tungsten) housed in an arc made out of fused quartz or fused alumina. The arc is filled with gas and metal salts. The gas expedites the initial strike and once the arc is heated, it evaporates the metal salts forming plasma (ionized gas). Plasma increases the intensity of the light considerably and also reduces power consumption to a minimal level. The LED lamps may require time to fully establish the complete light intensity when turned on. This is because the ballast requires time to establish an electric arc.
